"Music on the Corner at First Presbyterian" will present a free concert by

the Garth Newel Emerging Artists Piano and String Ensemble on Monday, July

24 at 7:00 p.m. The program will include works by Dvorak, Brahms,

Shostakovich and Merfeld. The Fellowship musicians hold bachelor of music,

masters of music and doctoral degrees from major universities and music

conservatories. They are selected by audition to attend the month-long

Emerging Artists Fellowship Program at Garth Newel Music Center in Hot

Springs where they study under the Garth Newel resident artists and guest

musicians. The program is supported by Garth Newel donors. Those attending

are invited to bring canned or boxed food items or a monetary gift to

benefit local food pantries the church supports. First Presbyterian Church

is located on the Corner of Maple and Locust in Covington. The accessible

entrance is on Locust St. across from the mid-city parking lot.

Covington, VA (July 17, 2017) - “Music on the Corner” at First Presbyterian will present the Garth Newel Emerging Artists Piano and String Ensemble in a concert at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 24.

The eleven musicians from major universities and conservatories have been participating in the Emerging Artist Fellowship Program at Garth Newel Music Center in Hot Springs.

The advanced college, master’s degree and doctoral-level musicians were selected by audition for the fellowships that are underwritten by Garth Newel donors. For a month, they are mentored by members of the Garth Newel Piano Quartet and coached by many of the center’s featured guest artists.

The program will feature works for violin, viola, cello and piano by Dvorak, Brahms, Shostakovich and Robert Merfeld.

Participating in the Fellowship Program this year are: Kayla Williams, viola, Lynn Conservatory of Music; Anna Bishop, violin, Virginia Commonwealth University and Chicago College of Performing Arts; Bartholomew Shields, violin, University of Wisconsin-Madison; Alexander Harden, violin, Peabody Conservatory of Music and Michelle Kim, violin, Seoul National University, University of Michigan and Rice University.

Also, Katherine Benson, piano, Eastman School of Music and Northwestern University; Kamyron Williams, cello, Indiana University and University of Michigan; Katharine Dryden, viola, Yale University and SUNY- Purchase; Leah Plave, cello, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary; Benjamin Osterhouse, cello, University of Minnesota; Jenny Li, violin, Duke University.

Isaac Melamed, Garth Newel’s resident cellist, co-artistic director, and coordinator of the Emerging Artists Program commented: “We are thrilled to be hosting 11 wonderful Emerging Artist Fellows this year. They are fun, creative, talented and incredibly dedicated to their craft. Their concert program features works by landmark composers of the 19th and 20th centuries: Dvorak, Brahms and Shostakovich. Each work offers something different and exciting, covering a vast spectrum of emotions and sound worlds.

“Through our second annual PEAPs (Patrons of the Emerging Artist Program), each Fellow has been paired with an enthusiastic sponsor who will be attending their concerts and interacting with them throughout their month-long stay in Bath County”

The Fellows will also be performing in Herter Hall at Garth Newel, along with resident and guest artists on July 29 (5:00 p.m.), and July 30 (3:00 p.m.). As the finale of the month-long study period, the Emerging Artist Fellows Showcase will on Sunday, Aug. 6, 3:00 p.m., when the musicians will perform works by Beethoven, Haydn and Ravel.

The concert at First Presbyterian church is free and open to the public. Those attending are invited to bring boxed or canned food or a monetary gift to benefit local food pantries supported by the church.

First Presbyterian Church is located on the corner of Maple Avenue and Locust Street in downtown Covington. The accessible entrance is on Locust Street.
