Phlebotomy, Pharmacy Technician Courses Begin in October at DSLCC   Clifton Forge, VA (AUgust 17, 2017) - Dabney S. Lancaster Community College is offering two health-care related courses, “Phlebotomy Technician” and “Pharmacy Technician,” through the non-credit program this fall. Both begin in October on the DSLCC main campus in Clifton Forge. “Phlebotomy Technician” is a 90-hour, 10-week course that will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, October 3 through December 14, from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. in Room 218, Backels Hall. Class will also meet on three Saturdays. This course prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. In addition to the classroom work, the course includes a 40-hour clinical externship rotation. To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 90 hour program, agree to a thorough background check and drug screening, and meet other requirements. Students who complete this program will have the opportunity to pursue the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Phlebotomy Technician Exam. Full tuition is $2,250 and includes textbooks. However, students who are Virginia residents may pay only $750 if they qualify under the New Economy Workforce Credential Grant (WCG) program (terms and conditions will apply); the tuition fee could be further reduced to $75 for those who qualify under the FANTIC program, which is based on income. “Pharmacy Technician,” a 50-hour classroom course, prepares students to work in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, October 17 through December 7, from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m., in Room 224, Backels Hall. Topics to be covered include: pharmacy medical terminology, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Through classroom lecture and hands-on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs,” I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement. The tuition of $1,199 includes textbooks, but does not include the cost of the PTCB exam.
