An Evening with Virginia Author Beth Macy: Oct. 30th

Clifton Forge, VA (Oct. 4, 2017) - The public is cordially invited to spend an evening with noted author Beth Macy. Sponsored by the Clifton Forge Public Library in partnership with the Historic Masonic Theatre, the program will be held in the Masonic Underground. It will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 30.

Ms. Macy is the “New York Times” bestselling author of “Factory Man” and “Truevine.” “Factory Man” is currently in development to become an HBO miniseries that will be executive produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, with Beth consulting.

A longtime reporter who lives in Roanoke, VA, Macy specializes in outsiders and underdogs. She has won more than a dozen national journalism awards, including a Nieman Fellowship for Journalism at Harvard in 2010.

Among the marginalized groups she has chronicled for newspapers and magazines are Hispanic immigrants, African refugees, caregivers for the elderly, veterans with PTSD, and displaced factory workers.

“For more than 25 years,” Beth says, “I’ve been privileged to report on these stories from the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia — previously for ‘The Roanoke Times’ and, more recently, in occasional essays for ‘The New York Times.’ I’ve also written for magazines, radio, and online journals; from locations ranging from a mobile home in Bassett, Virginia, to a crowded cholera ward in Limbe, Haiti.”

Macy has been published in “Oprah Magazine”, “Parade”, “The New York Times”, “Salon”, and “Christian Science Monitor”. For two decades, she was the families beat reporter at “The Roanoke (Va.) Times & World News”, where many of her longer pieces originated.

In a recent interview with James River Writers, Ms. Macy spoke about the topic of her forthcoming book. “It’s the opioid epidemic,” Beth said. It is “told through three Virginia communities that I believe illustrate its different phases and illuminate the stigma and denial pervading the issue so much today. Working title is ‘Dopesick,’ and it will publish August 2018.”

Macy summarizes her approach to storytelling: “Report from the ground up, establish trust, be patient, find stories that tap into universal truths. Eat the posole. Get out of your ZIP code. To do good, be a human first.”

Macy concludes, “Keep digging has always been the gist of my journalism M.O.” And, she emphasizes, “Follow what moves you.”

Beth Macy’s program will conclude with a book signing. Copies of her books will be available for purchase.

Admission is free.

Light refreshments will be provided.

The Masonic Underground is located at 510 Main Street.
