'Remembering Green Pastures' Event Set At Masonic Underground Jan. 13, 2018

Clifton Forge, VA (Nov. 29, 2017) - On Friday, January 12, 2018, 7:00 p.m., a “Remembering Green Pastures” storytelling event will be held in the Historic Masonic Theatre Underground.

All Highlands residents are cordially invited to this community event to share their memories - recent and long-past—of the historic Green Pastures Park in Longdale. Built by the Dolly Ann Civilian Conservation Corp Camp at the request of the Clifton Forge chapter of the NAACP, Green Pastures opened in 1940 to provide the African American community a place to gather in the era of segregation.

Currently in the process of being placed on the National Registry of Historic Places, Green Pastures figures large in the history and memories of many western Virginia residents. Green Pastures is the third book in the What’s Your Story? series. The nonprofit, community-building project is dedicated to preserving the oral history of the Alleghany Highlands as it builds community and commitment.

Come share your stories of Green Pastures. Be part of the community-centered historic preservation effort that is What’s Your Story? Come be part of re-telling the Green Pastures story on January 12th. It gets underway at 7:00 pm in the Historic Masonic Theatre Underground.

"Tell your story. Celebrate the past, be part of the present, help shape our future," said the organizers in a news release.
