Brown Bag Book Club to Meet January 18

Clifton Forge, VA (Jan. 4, 2018) - The Clifton Forge Public Library’s Brown Bag Book Club will meet on Thursday, January 18.

The group will discuss Rachel Joyce's debut novel, “The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry,” which follows a man who suddenly and without any warning or planning, sets off on a pilgrimage across England in the hope of delaying the death of his old friend, Queenie. At first glance, Harold appears to be a sad, lonely Caspar Milquetoast. However, the unexpected letter from Queenie shakes “him out of his monotonous life and [sends] him on a voyage of self-discovery.” It soon becomes clear that “one man’s quiet timidity should not be taken at face value.”

The “New York Times” says the author “writes about how easily a mousy, domesticated man can get lost and how joyously he can be refound.”

Erica Wagner, writing for “The Times (UK)”, says, "Harold's journey is ordinary and extraordinary; it is a journey through the self, through modern society, through time and landscape. It is a funny book, a wise book, a charming book - but never cloying. It's a book with a savage twist - and yet never seems manipulative. Perhaps because Harold himself is just wonderful.”

The group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., in the Library’s Michael Armstrong Community Room.

New members are always welcome.  Participants are encouraged to bring a friend and to bring a lunch. Dessert will be provided.
