Dr. Elda Stanco Downey

Cultural Intelligence Workshop Set at DSLCC April 9

 
Clifton Forge, VA (March 30, 2018) - Dabney S. Lancaster Community College will host a cultural intelligence workshop on Monday, April 9, beginning at 11:30 am in Moomaw Center on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus and simultaneously via Zoom to Room 906 at the DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center in Buena Vista.

“Use Your Cross-Cultural and Intercultural Toolbox to Lead” is the topic for the workshop, to be presented by Dr. Elda Stanco Downey, the founder and CEO of “Roanoke Spanish”, a cultural intelligence services firm based in Roanoke.

Languages and communication are at Dr. Stanco Downey’s core: She was born in Venezuela and grew up trilingual, speaking Spanish and Italian at home and English at the International school she began attending at age 4.

Dr. Stanco Downey earned an Honors Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Romance Languages and Literature at the University of Chicago. She holds an M.A. and PhD in Hispanic Studies from Brown University and has been a visiting scholar at the Universidad de Salamanco in Spain and Harvard University.

She has over 24 years of experience working, living and traveling in domestic and international settings, the building blocks of the cultural intelligence services offered by her firm, Roanoke Spanish. She has been on the faculty at Roanoke College, Hollins University and Brown University, and she is currently a member of the faculty at Virginia Tech’s Carilion School of Medicine. She serves on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Roanoke Valley, the Board of Local Colors and the Board of the Roanoke City Market Foundation. She was appointed by Gov. Terry McAuliffe to the Board of Trustees of the Roanoke Higher Education Authority in 2017.
