Clifton Forge, VA (July 11, 2018) - More than 100 job-seekers connected with over 50 area employers on the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College campus in Clifton Forge on May 16 for the first Career Fair hosted by America’s Promise Grant.
DSLCC is a partner, along with two out-of-state colleges -- Eastern West Virginia Community College and Alleghany College of Maryland -- on the pilot America’s Promise Job Driven Grant Program through the Department of Labor, known as America’s Promise 220 Grant (AP220). The AP220 consortium is designed to provide individuals with the opportunity to receive high-quality education and training that leads to industry-recognized credentials and degrees. The program offers tuition assistance to qualifying students based on available funding, and ability to meet performance measures as determined by the Department of Labor and AP220 staff. AP220 serves unemployed, underemployed, and incumbent workers with priority given to veterans, unemployed workers, and students leveraging other funding sources.
‚ÄúBy organizing a multi-employer event, the AP220 team at Dabney was able to assist our rural community, as well as our AP220 students,‚ÄĚ says Jenny Wright, AP 220 Project Director. ‚ÄúThe AP220 team was pleased to connect our local employers and community partners with our local community college.‚ÄĚ
Highlands Community Bank and Highlands Media Group sponsored a live radio broadcast during the job fair, pulling in participants during the day. An online newspaper, the Alleghany Journal, posted interviews (on its website and social media outlets) with a dozen local employers, who were willing to share their story.
‚ÄúThis event helped to revitalize our community, our students and Dabney S. Lancaster Community College,‚ÄĚ noted Wright.
AP220 offers year round workforce development activities for students and the community including mock interviews, financial stability classes, resume workshops, and many other activities that help with career advancement, as well as a monthly newsletter and individualized services for those who are enrolled in the grant.
