DSLCC Healthcare Courses Beginning Soon

Clifton Forge, VA (July 18, 2018) - Dabney S. Lancaster Community College will be offering three non-credit healthcare programs through its Workforce Solutions and Community Education division this semester: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) on the DSLCC main campus in Clifton Forge; and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) and Dialysis Technician, both at the DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center in Buena Vista. All three begin this summer and continue into the fall semester.

Dialysis Technician

Students enrolled in the Dialysis Technician course will learn how to operate kidney dialysis machines, prepare dialyzer reprocessing and delivery systems, as well as maintain and repair equipment, under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses. Dialysis technicians work with patients during dialysis procedures and monitor and record vital signs, as well as administer local anesthetics and drugs as needed. Additionally, they may also be involved in the training of patients for at-home dialysis treatment. This program does not include a national or state certification as part of its overall objectives. Additionally, there is no student internship or clinical rotation offered.

Classes start July 30 and will meet from 6:00-9:30 PM on Monday and Wednesday evenings through September 17 in Room 908 at the DSLCC Rockbridge Center, located at 35 Vista Links Drive, Buena Vista. The $999 tuition includes textbooks. To register or for more information, call Robin Jennings at (540) 863-2899 or email communityed@dslcc.edu.

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, a fifteen-week non-credit course that prepares students to sit for the National HealthCareer Association CCMA exam, will begin August 14 and meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 9:30 pm in Room 908 at the DSLCC Rockbridge Center, through December 20. There are also five Saturday sessions: August 25, September 15, October 13, November 10 and December 1. The RRC is located at 35 Vista Links Drive, Buena Vista.

The CCMA course prepares students to be professional medical assistants dedicated to patient care management. Graduates will be equipped to assist physicians with examinations and treatment, take medical histories, perform diagnostic tests, expose X-ray films, sterilize instruments and supplies and assist with minor surgery.

The program includes 160 hours of classroom instruction and an opportunity to complete a 120-hour externship with a local healthcare provider. The full tuition fee is $3,210.
