Clifton Forge High School Class of 1968 Featured at Library

Clifton Forge, VA (August 13, 2018) - The Clifton Forge High School Alumni Association is featuring the Class of 1968 as part of its annual display at the Clifton Forge Public Library.

The display includes trophies from various sports and activities that have not been typically featured in the Association’s previous displays. Also featured are awards received in Band, Cheerleading, Baseball, and Track.

“The center of the display,” says Alumni Secretary Suzy Mullikin, “is our precious Little Brown Jug.”

In 1937, before the Clifton Forge Covington football game, Covington had already been awarded the district title even though Clifton Forge had not lost any games. According to district rules, Clifton Forge was not eligible because its’ team had not played all of the teams in the league. Coach Pop Kaye and the Covington Coach discussed the matter and decided there should be a trophy for that night’s game.

A jug was resting on the coach’s desk. He picked it up and decided it would do just fine! Clifton Forge won that game. In 1982, it was decided that whoever won the final game was to keep the precious jug. Clifton Forge won that game.

When the Clifton Forge Alumni Association was formed, the Clifton Forge High School trophies were given to the Association by Alleghany High School. For some unknown reason, the Little Brown Jug was not included. It had found its way back to Covington.

“We are delighted to have it back for All Alumni Weekend,” Ms. Mullikin says. “If you want to take a glimpse, do it now because it must be returned soon.”

The All Alumni Weekend is held during the third weekend of August. During this years’ event, the Association will be adding several more deserving athletes to the Sports Hall of Fame.

Although the Clifton Forge High School Alumni Association was only established in 1996, Ms. Mullikin says, “We have donated tens of thousands of dollars towards scholarships and our scholarship program is open to descendants of alumni.” The Association also supports the Clifton Forge Little League, the Stars and Stripes Fourth of July events, the Masonic Theatre, and many other local causes.

The Alumni Association’s display will continue throughout August.

The Clifton Forge Public Library is located at 535 Church Street.
