Some Changes at Forest Service Recreation Amenities in Bath County

Hot Springs, VA (August 13, 2018) - The George Washington and Jefferson National Forest is making changes to amenities at two recreation sites in Bath County, Virginia. Areas impacted include the Poor Farm Dispersed Recreation area along the Jackson River and the McClintic Point Campground at the northern end of Lake Moomaw. The camping area at the Poor Farm Dispersed Recreation Area is temporarily closed effective immediately thru the fall of 2018 to rehabilitate the campsites. The temporary closure will allow grass to grow on the sites. The vault toilet, picnic area, and two fields available for dispersed camping at the Poor Farm Dispersed Recreation Area remain open to visitors throughout the year.

Drinking water at the McClintic Point Campground at the northern end of Lake Moomaw is no longer available due to on-going water quality issues. Due to the poor water quality, there are no plans to replace the well to return drinking water to the site. Visitors to McClintic Point Campground should bring their own water. Drinking water is available at the Bolar Flats Marina approximately 2 miles away.

“I regret any inconvenience these changes will have on visitors,” said District Ranger Elizabeth McNichols. “These changes will address maintenance needs and safety concerns. In the coming months, we will continue asking communities for input to guide the direction of long-term changes to the Forest recreation program.”
