Birthday Party Held For Gretel Anderson; Mayor Issues Proclamation

 
Clifton Forge, VA (April 14, 2019) - Clifton Forge native, Gretel Anderson, was recognized and celebrated on Sunday, April 14, 2019 as she prepares to mark her 100th birthday on Friday, April 19th.

Many friends, relatives and former students turned out on a rainy afternoon to thank her for her decades of public service, but also for years of friendship, her dedication to the First Baptist Church and more.

In addition to over 100 birthday cards, she received letters of thanks from institutions like the Alleghany County School Division and even a proclamation unanimously passed by the Clifton Forge Town Council declaring April 19th at "Gretel Anderson Day".

Here is the full text of that proclamation:

A Proclamation To Declare April 19, 2019 Gretel Anderson Day

WHEREAS, Gretel Anderson was born on April 19, 1919 in Clifton Forge, Virginia to Mr. and Mrs. George Lee and except for the time spent pursuing her educational degrees has been a lifelong resident of Clifton Forge, and

WHEREAS, following graduation from Jefferson High School in 1937 as its valedictorian, she received a bachelor's degree from Hampton Institute and a master's degree from New York University. and

WHEREAS, she sent her entire career in education serving as a high school teacher and assistant principal at the former Jefferson High School and a high school teacher for Clifton Forge High School and Alleghany County before retiring in 1984 after 40 years of public service; and

WHEREAS, Gretel also shared unselfishly her time and talents serving on the Social Services Board, Main Street Board, and the Library Board; and

WHEREAS, Gretel will celebrate her 100th birthday on April 19, 2019;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the Town Council of the Town of Clifton Forge that Friday, April 19, 2019 is hereby declared Gretel Anderson Day in our town in recognition of her lifelong dedication to Clifton Forge and its citizens.
