Glencairn Scholarships Awarded at Area High Schools

 
Valley Ridge, VA (May 8, 2019) - Eleven seniors at Alleghany High School, Bath County High School, Covington High School and Boys’ Home have been awarded a total of $352,000 in scholarships by The Glencairn Foundation, which was formed in 2009 from funds received from the estate of an anonymous donor. The scholarships are for $8,000 per year for four years, a total of $32,000 for each recipient. Scholarships totaling over $2,587,000 have been given from 2010 through 2019, the years the Foundation has made grants.

The scholarships were awarded Wednesday at the Jackson River Technical Center by Clifton Forge attorneys James D. Snyder and R. Meade Snyder, Trustees of The Glencairn Foundation.

Recipients of the scholarships and the schools they will attend this fall are:

Alleghany High School: Isabelle S. Borduas (University of South Carolina), Lindsey Jo Brown (Virginia Tech), Macyn G. Carter (James Madison University), Allison Terra Graham (Old Dominion University), Vanna N. Hoke (James Madison University) and Caitlyn E. Tierney (Virginia Tech).

Bath County High School: Jillian C. Brown (Marshall University).

Covington High School: Tijon James-Rice (Radford University), Gara K. McDaniel (George Mason University) and Samantha R. Myers (Radford University).

Boys’ Home: Yeabsira Abe D. Ashebir (Radford University).

The scholarships are awarded solely on the basis of merit in academic achievement, citizenship, leadership, extra curricular activities and community involvement. Recipients must major in one of the following areas of study in college: art, dance, drama, economics, English, history, journalism, languages, music, philosophy, political science, psychology or sociology at a non-profit, accredited, four-year college or university.

Jim Snyder said scholarships from The Glencairn Foundation will be awarded annually to qualifying students from Alleghany High School, Bath County High School, Covington High School and Boys’ Home. The recipients are selected by a scholarship committee at each school and by the Trustees.
