Valley Ridge, VA (June 4, 2019) - Abby Martin, a rising Junior at Alleghany High School, was selected by the AHS faculty as their representative to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference at James Madison University this past weekend, May 31-June 2.

HOBY is a worldwide leadership conference that started in 1958. Its mission is to inspire and prepare future young leaders for a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. HOBY empowers young people to dream big, make an impact and change the world. Each program adheres to the five core HOBY values- Volunteerism, Integrity, Excellence, Diversity, and Community Partnership.

Two hundred fifty-six high school ambassadors from all across the state of Virginia attended the JMU conference along with 65 volunteer staff members. While there the students listened to motivational speakers, learned and practiced ways to improve their school and community, did a big service project, and so much more!

All participants embraced the experience and walked away as empowered leaders ready to make a difference in the world.

Abby came home from the program with a new outlook on leadership and is excited to use what she learned to help improve our area. She is the daughter is Daryl and Mary Lynn Martin of Clifton Forge.

At AHS she is a member of the Varsity Cross Country team, Varsity Swim team and Varsity Track team. She is also a class officer, member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Mountaineer Maniacs and is a teen volunteer at Lewis Gale Alleghany.
