Covington Condemns 115 N. Maple Ave.

Covington, VA (August 15, 2019) - Building Official, Eric Tyree, early this morning condemned 115 N. Maple Ave., also known as Lawson’s Hot Dog House.

The City’s Building Official encountered a property that had structural failure, such that the back portion of the building gave way.

"Despite this unfortunate impact to our local business, there were no injuries associated with this structural failure, nor are any residents displaced. Coordination efforts were also initiated with the Department of Public Works to secure the area as well as the areas energy service providers to shut off gas, electric and water service; to prevent further damage to the building," said the City Manager.

It is important to note that there was not an existing active case open relating to code compliance.

A structural engineer is slated to assess the property tomorrow.

“The City of Covington strives to be proactive in its property inspections, to ensure and promote building safety; however due to legal limitations, we require permission to enter by someone of standing with any property we inspect or have ample probable cause to petition the courts for entry. As always the City encourages its residents and business owners to report any suspected code violations or building issues to us directly”, said the City Manager.

Should you wish to report any building or code violation concerns please contact, (540) 965-6356 to speak with the City’s Development Services Division.
