Letter: Senior Law Day 2019 Well-Attended
By William T. Wilson

Dear Editor, Alleghany Journal:

On August 14, 2019, the Alleghany-Bath Highland Bar (ABH Bar) Association held another Senior Law Day program at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College (DSLCC). It was well attended, with over 200 seniors and their caregivers in attendance. The speakers' panel consisted of Attorney Meade Snyder; Dr. David E. Crandall; Attorney William A. Parks; Attorney Jeanne M. Hepler; Elaine Engleman, Adult Services; Pat Loving; Commonwealth Attorney Ann Gardner; Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Shaun Mabry and Sheriff Kevin Hall. Our special guest was Ms. Marni Byrum, President of the Virginia State Bar (VSB) and we were also please to have Frank Brown and his wife, Susan, in attendance. Frank is a former chairman of the Senior Lawyers Conference of the VSB.

The speakers' panel covered most of the issues interesting to seniors. The program was not meant to be an in-depth lecture on the law but more of a "heads-up" type of program. The idea was to highlight some of the issues and give out information in the form of written materials that would help seniors and their caregivers locate lawyers or other contact persons needed to address their problems. The program started at 10:00 a.m. and ended at 2:30 with an opportunity for attendees to ask questions. Following the formal part of the program, the LewisGale Hospital Alleghany provided free blood pressure screenings and glucose (sugar) screenings for those who wanted that testing.

The entire program was free to the attendees and a box lunch was also provided without charge catered by Club Car in Clifton Forge.

Putting together the event was truly a community effort. A number of Pastors served on the organization committee along with members of the A-B-H Bar. The following were part of the organizational committee: Pastor Steve Noel; Rev. Johnnie Mize; Rev. Nathan Miller; Rev. Bill Hartsfield; Ms. Patrice Jefferson; Commonwealth Attorney Ann Gardner; Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Shaun Mabry; Attorney Jeanne Hepler; Pastor Doug Hollenbeck; Mrs. Rachael Thompson and Pastor Sung Woon Yoo.

The following sponsors made contributions so that a free lunch could be provided: WestRock; A-B-H Bar; Highlands Community Bank; Modern Woodmen of American - Chapter 11393; DSLCC; Kissito HealthCare (Brian Center Health & Rehab Center); Jackson River Community Credit Union; Good News Church; Granbery Memorial UMC Outreach Committee; Temple Baptist Church; Loving Funeral Home; Nicely Funeral Home; Chamber of Commerce; Arritt Funeral Home; Chamber of Commerce; Covington Ruritan; Huffman Insurance Agencies - Nationwide Insurance; Garten Enterprises and Alleghany Printing.

LewisGale Hospital Alleghany also provided bottled water for those present.

All in all, it was a very successful program. The A-B-H Bar hopes to do the program again three or four years from now. We thank all who participated for coming.
