Hit List Discovered On Local Student

Low Moor, VA (Sept. 9, 2019) - At approximately 4:00 p.m. on September 9, 2019, the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that an Alleghany High School student currently attending the Rivermont School in Covington was in possession of a hit list of students and employees to whom the aforementioned student planned to do harm. Upon receiving this tip, the sheriff’s office began an immediate investigation into the matter. As a result of this investigation, a juvenile suspect was taken into custody and placed in a juvenile detention facility. The investigation is ongoing and criminal charges are pending. At no time were any acts of actual harm carried out by the suspect.

The hit list that was recovered during the investigation contained the names of students from Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Rockbridge County Public Schools who are current or past attendees of the Rivermont School. The parents/guardians of these students have been personally notified of the situation. The list also contained the names of employees of the Rivermont School, an Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office deputy, and members of the suspect’s family. All of these individuals have also been notified of their presence on the list.

The sheriff’s office is confident that this is an isolated situation involving only the one juvenile suspect and that any potential threat has been neutralized. As more information becomes available it will be released to the public to the fullest extent permitted. Questions or concerns may be directed to the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office.
