DSLCC Hosts Health and Wellness Fair October 15

 
Clifton Forge, VA (Oct. 2, 2019) - Dabney S. Lancaster Community College will host a Health and Wellness Fair on Tuesday, October 15, in Moomaw Center on the DSLCC main campus in Clifton Forge. The day-long event, sponsored by DSLCC Student Activities, is free and open to the public.

New this year is a Kids’ Health Fair from 2 pm to 6 pm, sponsored by DSLCC Nursing Students Class of 2020, with a fire truck tour, fun games, great food, smoothie bike rides and more. In addition, DSLCC Massage Therapy students will offer chair massages from 10 am to 2 pm.

A number of activities are planned, including a Red Cross Blood Drive and a Flu Clinic sponsored by Alleghany County/Covington Health Department, as well as exhibits from a variety of health-related organizations.

The blood drive will be held from 9 am to 1 pm. DSLCC students have priority; members of the community wishing to donate blood should call DSLCC Student Activities at (540) 863-2828 for an appointment.

The Flu Vaccine clinic from 9 am to 6 pm will be sponsored by the Roanoke City & Alleghany Health Districts. Local staff of the Alleghany/Covington Health Department will have a limited number of vaccines to give FREE to anyone 6 months of age and older. Those without insurance or under insured are encouraged to attend. If you have insurance, please bring your card as it may be needed if the initial free doses have been used prior to your arrival. The DSLCC flu clinic has been utilized annually as Emergency Preparedness Training to ensure the community can respond to any local mass event.

A number of area agencies and organizations will participate from 10 am to 2 pm: Alleghany County/Covington Health Department; Alleghany Highlands Community Services Board; Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield; Bath Community Hospital, Bath Community Physician's Group—Covington Clinic, Hot Springs Clinic, and Millboro; Rockbridge Area Health Department; and Safehome Systems Inc. LewisGale Hospital Alleghany will offer glucose testing and blood pressure checks.

Staff from the DSLCC Workforce division will provide information on DSLCC allied health care programs and tuition assistance available for those programs.

A 2014 Australian documentary, “That Sugar Film,” will be shown at 11:30 am. The film looks at hidden sugar in foods and the effect it can have on the human body.

SonnySide Café will be open 7:30 am to 1:30 pm, selling breakfast items, as well as lunch, including sandwiches, salads, desserts, beverages and more.
