Chorale To Perform Part 2 & 3 Of 'Messiah' On Saturday

Covington, VA (Oct. 9, 2019) - The Alleghany Highlands Chorale will give a special concert on Saturday evening at six o'clock at First Presbyterian Church. The presentation of G.F. Handel's MESSIAH - Part 2 and 3 are offered as part of celebratory musical events surrounding First Presbyterian's 200th anniversary.

Under the direction of Kathy Crutchfield the Chorale will perform the portions of Handel's great work that tell the Easter story rather than the most familiar Christmas section. Part 2 begins with "Behold The Lamb of God" and moves through the story of the Passion of Christ, ending in the jubilant "Hallelujah" Chorus. Part 3 focuses on the resurrection, opening with "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" and closing with the majestic "Worthy Is The Lamb That Was Slain".

The German-born Handel wrote many compositions in the mid 1700's but "MESSIAH" is the piece for which he primarily remembered. It is widely considered the most famous oratorio ever written.

Soloist will be Kathy Crutchfield, alto, Anne Scruggs, soprano, Dawn Wilson, soprano and Darius Liptrap, bass/baratone. Other members of the Alleghany highlands Chorale are: Betty Bunch, Pearl Miller, Sandra Minter and Cathy Rowan, sopranos. Anne Donovan, Meg Jackson, Frankie Marshall, Gail McHenry and Susan Rollinson, altos. Josh Craft, Lon Rollinson, Wayne Winebriner and John Young, tenors. Howard Liptrap, Tom McHenry, Wayne Ogden, and B.R. Rupert, bass.

Cathy Drummer is the chorale accompanist.

Doors will open for seating at First Presbyterian beginning at 5:30 pm on Saturday. Admission is by donation.

Arritt Funeral Home is corporate co-sponsor of the group that operates under the auspices of the Alleghany Highlands Arts Council. For more information about the concert or how to join the Chorale, call the Arts council at 962-2787.
