Alleghany Highlands Regional Library Notes Online Databases, Media

 
Covington, VA (March 31, 2020) - The Alleghany Highlands Regional Library has issued a comprehensive list of online databases and digital media for its customers and patrons to access during its closure.

"While the Alleghany Highlands Regional Library is closed due to public health concerns, patrons are reminded that they can still access online databases and digital media. This allows patrons of all ages to complete research and information quests, as well as access databases for leisure and entertainment. All of these services are found on the library’s webpage at www.ahrlib.org."."

Users of All Ages:

     â€¢     Hoopla Digital: Movies, television shows, music, ebooks, audiobooks, and comic books may be downloaded and viewed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with no late fees and no waiting.

     â€¢     OverDrive/Libby: The Blue Ridge Download Consortium, a collaboration of public libraries in western Virginia, provides an app that allows instant downloads of digital books, audiobooks, and magazines.      **Library card required

Adults:

     â€¢     AHRL Online Yearbooks: Over 100 yearbooks dating from 1921 until 1976 from local high schools have been digitized and indexed. Individual books for specific years may be accessed by typing the name of the yearbook or the school and the date on the search bar of this database. **No library card required

     â€¢     RB Digital: This single platform combines two former databases, OneClick for audiobooks and ebooks and Zinio, which offers 73 current magazine titles geared toward adults and teens.               **Library card required

     â€¢     Gale Legal Forms: This free website has thousands of legal documents for state and federal government agencies, business, personal data, and real estate.          **No library card required

     â€¢     Gale’s Career Transitions: This innovative database allows users to create resumes and cover letters; gives tips and techniques, career assessments, and interview simulations; and offers current listings of schools and programs to suit a variety of career interests.               **No library card required

     â€¢     Universal Class: This self-paced continuing education website offers over 500 free classes for business, real estate, law, general education, teacher resources, homeschooling, English as a second language, and computers.          **Library card required

Middle and High School Students:

     â€¢     Gale Virtual Reference Library: While this database is most often used by students, it is also helpful for adults looking for quick information. It offers encyclopedias and general reference books, including history, law, literature, medicine, science, religion, and social science. **No library card required

     â€¢     Mango Languages: This excellent learning tool offers instruction in more than seventy world languages, focusing on conversation and easy communication skills.          **Library card required

     â€¢     Rocket Languages: Multimedia packages allow users to focus on speaking and improving language skills in an interactive program.     **Library card required

     â€¢     Find It Virginia: This collection of databases provides free access at any time to reference materials such as newspapers, magazine and journal articles, and encyclopedias. Materials are available for all age ranges and interests.

     â€¢     Learning Express Library 3: The Learning Centers on this database offers practice tests, exercises, skill builders, eBooks, and general information. This tool is a wonderful resource for students who are working on educational curriculum while not in school.               **No library card required

     â€¢     Kids’ InfoBits: Book, magazine, and news articles and photos cover 12 broad educational topics: art, science, technology, literature, social studies, geography, plants, animals, sports, music, and movies.          ** No library card required

     â€¢     Early World of Learning: World Book Encyclopedia’s online resource includes online encyclopedias for students from early learning through advanced sixth grade levels, eBooks, and an introduction to early language core concepts.               **Library card required

     â€¢     Scholastic Go: This online search engine (formerly called Grolier Online) allows kids to find GoTube videos; world news articles from newspapers, magazines, and cable news organizations; and atlases of the world and United States.           **No library card required
