Summer Teacher Institute Starts July 13 at DSLCC

 
Clifton Forge, VA (May 28, 2020) - Two courses - one online and the other in a classroom - are being offered this summer by Dabney S. Lancaster Community College for the 2020 Summer Teacher Institute.

A two-credit online course for teachers and aides in all content areas, grades 5 and up, “Designing Your Course Using CANVAS,” (EDU 195-M5W) will be held July 13-24. CANVAS is a leading open-source management system used by institutions and instructors worldwide. Ashley Pratt is the instructor.

Participants will learn to set up a class, work with students, teach online and leverage several key tools and features in Canvas for student success. Also covered: How to navigate the layout of Canvas, customize course settings and incorporate a course syllabus, add assignments, build quizzes, and use the gradebook, among others.

“Adverse Childhood Experiences and Spirituality in Education” (EDU 195-M6D) is a one-credit course that will be held on Monday and Tuesday, July 20-21, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, in Room 409, Warren Hall, on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus.

Instructor Tina Dressler will discuss how childhood trauma affects the brain and learning, and ways to overcome these experiences and increase resiliency. Participants will learn about spirituality and the role it plays in education. The course is recommended for K-12 teachers, aides and administrators, in all content areas.

Advanced registration is required for both courses and payment is due upon registration. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tuition per credit is $157.50.
