Cov. Police Chief Provides Update On Emergency Roadway Repairs

Covington, VA (June 2, 2020) - A portion of Route 18 (S. Carpenter Drive) in the City of Covington has had one lane closed for road maintenance and repairs. The location is on Rt. 18, between Route 220 (E. Madison Street) and Route 18 (E. Edgewood Avenue) near the Cedar Hill Cemetery. Stop signs were put in place in the area of the lane closure to guide motorists as follows:

• Drivers approaching from the north must come to a complete stop at the stop sign and proceed when the open lane is clear.

• Drivers approaching from the south must come to a complete stop at the stop sign and proceed when the open lane is clear.

There have been signs placed in both directions approaching the stop signs to give prior warning to motorists before coming to the lane closure. Contractors along with utility providers will be on-site Monday, June 29, 2020 to begin repair plans using soil nails to stabilize the slope as a permanent repair. The city will also be working to address the de-stabilization of slopes impacting the roadway on Ashland, Mallow, and Edgemont as well during this effort. As closures and impacts become known for these areas, additional communications and updates will be

provided. Questions can be directed to the City Manager’s office by calling 540-965-6300.

The Covington Emergency Dispatch Center can assist with reporting road hazards, answering transportation questions, or providing information related to Covington roads. Call (540) 965-6333 or email at covington.va.us. Communication Officers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Updates on this project will be given to local media for distribution when it becomes available.
