Karen Staunton

Alleghany County School Board Names Staunton As AHS Principal

 
Low Moor, VA (Feb. 15, 2021) - The Alleghany County School Board appointed Mrs. Karen C. Staunton to serve as the Principal at Alleghany High School effective February 16, 2021.

Mrs. Staunton graduated from Covington High School and continued her education at both Virginia Tech and Radford University. She received her bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies/Public Relations from Virginia Tech in 1992. Mrs. Staunton received master’s degrees in Library Media Science from Radford University in 2007 and Educational Leadership from Radford University in 2013.

Mrs. Staunton began her educational career as a Library Media Specialist at Boiling Spring Elementary School from 2006-2012. She served as the Library Media Specialist from 2012-2016 at Alleghany High School. From 2016-2018, Mrs. Staunton served as an Assistant Principal at Mountain View Elementary School. In 2018, she returned to Alleghany High School as an Assistant Principal/Athletic Director for one year and moved to the position of Assistant Principal she most recently held.

A lifelong resident of the community, Mrs. Staunton is married to Kit Staunton and they have three children, Burke, Kendall and Conlan.

When asked about her appointment, Mrs. Staunton stated, “I am honored by the trust placed in me by Mr. Callahan and the school board. I have worked with many outstanding administrators and educators during my time in Alleghany County Public Schools and I believe they have prepared me well for this challenge. I look forward to working with our faculty, staff, students, parents and the local community to make Alleghany High School the best it can be.”

Acting Division Superintendent Sherman Callahan noted, “Mrs. Staunton has shown her leadership ability in a variety of manners while employed with Alleghany County Public Schools, from librarian and testing coordinator, to elementary/secondary assistant principal and now principal at AHS. I am excited for her in this new challenge. Mrs. Staunton’s genuine compassion and dedication towards the success of her student body is second to none. I look forward to working with her during this new journey.”
