Entrepreneurship is Topic for Summer Governor’s School

Clifton Forge, VA (April 5, 2021) - “Entrepreneurial Changemaking 101” is the topic of this year’s two-week Summer Governor’s School hosted by Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, July 12-23.

“At DSLCC, we believe students can change the world for the better, both locally and globally,” says Dr. Samantha Steidle, who will be teaching the 100 percent online course. “Students are often inspired to work on meaningful challenges but aren’t sure where to start. Accomplishing their vision may involve launching a business, innovating within a corporation or driving social change, but all require the skill sets of entrepreneurial changemaking.”

Students will apply an eight-step learn-by-doing model to address social, environmental, and/or economic issues they are passionate about. In addition to inspiring civic engagement, service learning and social innovation, students will cultivate in-demand workforce skills, including complex problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, people management, coordinating with others, emotional intelligence, judgement and decision making, service orientation, negotiation, and cognitive flexibility.

Dr. Steidle, an educator for the National Association of Community College Entrepreneurship, has had extensive teaching experience at Virginia Western Community College. She holds a MBA from the University of Wisconsin-EClaire and a Ph.D. from Old Dominion University.

She recently defended her doctoral dissertation on the topic: “Exploring the Role(s) of Community Colleges in Addressing Wicked Problems Through Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration: An Entrepreneurial Approach to Sustainability (SDGs).”

The course includes ten sessions within the two-week period, and there is no tuition fee for participants. Rising 8th and 9th graders within the DSLCC service area are eligible to enroll.
