Del. Terry Austin Reports On House Of Delegate's First Week Of 2022 Session

To the Constituents of the 19th House District
The General Assembly completed its first week of the 2022 Session, and I wanted to provide a quick update on what’s been happening in Richmond.
My colleagues and I in the House of Delegates are working hard on behalf of the people of Virginia. This week we elected Delegate Todd Gilbert as Speaker of the House. Speaker Gilbert is from the Shenandoah Valley and is the first speaker in decades from west of the Blue Ridge. He was previously our Republican Majority Leader, and will serve the House well as Speaker. This past Saturday, we held the inauguration of our new Governor, Glenn Youngkin, Lt. Governor, Winsome Sears, and Attorney General, Jason Miyares. For the first time in eight years, we will have a completely Republican Administration and I look forward to working with all three in the coming years.
House Republicans have hit the ground running, with legislation being introduced that will ensure our schools remain high quality, teach children how to think not what to think, provide opportunities for innovation, and prepare students for real world opportunities. Other legislation we’re working on will repeal the grocery tax, send $300 per filer rebates back to taxpayers, and double the standard deduction.
Public safety will be our priority. We are working on legislation to bolster our law enforcement community to keep our communities safe and address the recent historic spike in the murder rate in Virginia. Public safety extends to safe roads, which is why I have introduced a bill that will revert recently enacted secondary road offenses back to primary offenses.
This session, I am honored to have been appointed by Speaker Gilbert to serve as Chairman of Transportation and Vice Chairman of Appropriations. I have also been reappointed to the Rules Committee. While serving as your Delegate, one of my top priorities has been our transportation system in Virginia, and ensuring that it continues to improve in safety, effectiveness, and efficiency as it relates to moving people and product. I have had conversations to this extent with Transportation Secretary-Designee Shep Miller, and I look forward to continuing our working relationship.
