VFW Post 1033 Promoting 'Roads Of Honor' Program

Covington, VA (Jan. 18,, 2022) - With the approval of the City of Covington, the Curtis A, Smith, 116th Infantry, VFW Post 1033, is launching its Roads of Honor Program in the city. The Roads of Honor consists of banners hung from utility poles that recognize veterans and their service to our country. The US Rte 60 corridor has been designated as the initial location for Covington’s Roads of Honor. It encompasses all of Monroe Street and Madison Avenue from the Rosedale Bridge to the City Limits near the Neathawk Lumber Company.

Applications accompany this news article and can also be obtained by emailing a request to Lplinkenhoker@aol.com. The cost of each banner is $150 and should include a $2.50 banner placement fee for a total cost of $152.50. All veterans who have honorably served the United States in its armed forces are eligible for the program. This would include the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Space Force, National Guard, and the Reserves of these forces. Veterans who have served during armed conflicts or in peacetime are all eligible.

Individuals wishing to honor a relative or friend should submit a photograph (not required) with an application detailing the name, rank, branch of service, and era of service; WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Kosovo, Persian Gulf, Iraq, Afghanistan, Cold War or peacetime. Questions about eligibility should be referred to VFW Post 1033 member, Richard Streck, whose contact information is on the application. The person submitting the application is responsible for verifying an individual’s service record and has authority to display the likeness of the individual.

Banners will be located on the Rte. 60 corridor in accordance with the date of the receipt of the application. Placement at a desired intersection will be honored to the extent possible. Banners will be ordered in bulk and usually in batches of twenty. Placement by city crews will be completed as work schedules permit, understanding that the needs of the city must take precedence. Individuals should respect the efforts of the city in this program and refrain from criticizing the process. Post 1033 will coordinate all aspects of the program with the city.

A number of these banners have been hung in the western sections of Alleghany County. Individuals interested in recognizing a veteran in our rural communities can contact Richard Streck and submit one of the attached applications indicating the desire for placement in the county.
