| Jackson River Sports Complex Making Quick Work of Mini Golf Course and Concession Stand
| By Jennifer Bailey Staff Writer | Covington, VA (May 2, 2025)— Over the past month, the Journal has kept a close eye on the progress being made at the Jackson River Sports Complex on their new gazebo, upcoming mini-golf course, and new concession stand.
Our first stop occurred on April 9 where we hopped out to snap a few photos of the progress being made on the already standing gazebo, pile of cinder blocks which would soon become the concession stand, and future mini golf course that, according to City Manager Allen Dressler, does not yet have a name.
On April 18, we made another trip back to capture more photos and were quite amazed at how quickly that small pile of cinder blocks turned into a partial building. At the time, it didn't have doors or a roof, but one could certainly get a general idea of what was becoming of the gray structure, complete with an already-paved patio. We also noticed that a few locals were already enjoying the serene gazebo, taking full advantage of its shade. While Parker Chambers strummed his guitar, Kasey Whitesel made herself comfortable on the floor, using the bench as a work area where she continued to draw during our visit. Her dog, Peanut, rested on a fuzzy towel and enjoyed the peacefulness of the park, likely allowing the nearby song of the Jackson River waters to lull his little body into a tranquil slumber. He was enough nice enough to let us pet him before retiring back to his makeshift bed and catching some z's next to his fur-mom.
Meanwhile, the mini golf course —which had been fully put together apart from the faux grass typically applied to the top— was a maze of small golf holes full of bends, curves, and even miniature blue bridges.
We paused for a quick phone call with Dressler who cited that the concession stand was quickly going up and will include a covered seating area where one can "...sit and enjoy a hot dog while watching the grandkids play."
Today, we made one final stop, speaking briefly with David Easton, one of the construction workers for Z&J Construction. "They're gonna start electrical on Monday," Easton said, "but it'll few more weeks or so [when the concession stand is complete]." As for the golf course, we noted the faux grass was making its way on a few of the holes, greenery has been planted, and stones have been laid down. At this point, it's quite easy to use the imagination.
