Covington, VA (Aug. 2, 2025)— It was a moving night for the "Relay For Life" and "Car Show" event, held last night from 6:00 p.m.—10 p.m. at the Jackson River Sports Complex in Covington, which included over $22,000 for cancer research. In fact, according to one of the event organizers, Andra Fridley, the final total was $22,091.64.

The event revved off with a car show, put on by the Alleghany Cruisers, beginning at 3:00 p.m., in conjunction with "Relay For Life." The sole purpose for this particular show was to help raise money for the relay's cause which ultimately goes to the American Cancer Society. A quick chat with Valerie Humphreys this week revealed that some of the money raised from "Relay For Life" for the American Cancer Society helps local families have access to much-needed resources during their battles with cancer.

After a brief opening ceremony that began at 6:00 p.m. for "Relay For Life," attending members who'd survived cancer held a purple banner that read "Survivors" and walked a lap around the short track circling a few vendors, all of whom were present to raise money for the event. As the survivors walked the course, Rachel Platten's "Fight Song" played loudly over the intercom, resulting in a few tears from some attendees.

According to Fridley, the fundraiser for "Relay For Life" officially closes out on September 30th, so folks still have time to make donations. There will be a "Relay Wrap-Up" on September 9th. We will have more on this at a later date.
