World War II Veteran Worked With Virginia Game Commission

Mr. Garland Preston Carson, Sr., age 93, of Covington, Virginia died Thursday, January 23, 2020 at the Brian Center Nursing Care, Low Moor.

He was the husband of the late Hattie Jeanette Graham Carson.

Mr. Carson was born August 25, 1926 in Covington, the son of the late Finnie Ontone Carson and Bessie McDaniel Carson.

He served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II where he was stationed with the 25th Tropic Lighting Division.

Preston was employed in the game management division of the Virginia Game Commission for twenty-three years before his retirement. Mr. Carson was an avid hunter and loved fishing and helping his wife grow a garden.

He was a member of the Parrish Court United Methodist Church.

Mr. Carson is survived by a son, Garland Preston Carson, Jr. and wife, Sharon of Henderson, NV and Russell Leroy Carson and wife, Chris Anne of Covington; a daughter, Kathy C. Wiseman and husband, Rick of New Castle; six grandchildren, Brian Wiseman, Matthew Wiseman, Dylan Carson, Rachel Carson, Cody Carson and Daniel Carson; two great grandchildren, Courtney Wiseman and Haley Wiseman; two brothers, Leroy Wilhelm of Fairfield and John A. Cook of Bristol; two sisters, Elise Stout of Powhatan and Irene McGraw of Richmond; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Carson was preceded in death by five brothers, Ed Carson, Tony Carson, Finnie Carson, Jack Carson and an infant, George Allen Carson and three sisters, Anne Aldridge, Josephine McCracken and Marie Mond.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2020 from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Deb Washer officiating, assisted by Rev. Sung Yoo. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Pallbearers will be Brian Wiseman, Matthew Wiseman, Dylan Carson, Kirk Lipes, Mark Ellis and Mike Lipes.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.
