Obituary for Margaret Mary (Mickey) Watkins Margaret Mary (Mickey) Watkins
Ireland Native Was Rockbridge County Social Worker

Margaret Mary (Mickey) Watkins died February 1, 2020 in her home.

She was born October 17, 1951 in Castlepollard Republic of Ireland.

Mickey was the daughter of Col. and Mrs. George McCartin, both deceased.

This beautiful Irish woman learned Gaelic, traveled to Ireland several times and was proud of her heritage. Traveling was a passion for her as she and Al or her girlfriends were always on the go.

Mickey's successful career involved social work, supervising and training social workers, family therapy, and Rockbridge Area Hospice social work. She was always innovative, going far beyond the job description. Mickey designed programs to enhance the lives of families and children.

She always stuck to her convictions. Politics was a strong part of her life. Mickey always stayed current on all news, volunteered for her political party and if necessary protested to enhance her opinions.

Mickey was very witty and the first one to see humor in any situation. Her low key personality drew everyone in. Over the years she had many friends and colleagues who enjoyed this caring, wonderful woman.

Mickey is survived by her husband of 42 years, Al; a brother, Christopher; her loving friends, Phyllis and Debbie and her dog, Rooney.

Thanks are extended to Rockbridge Area Hospice, particularly Christy, Pam, and Damien for their invaluable care.

If you wish to make a donation to honor Mickey, contributions may be made to Kerrs Creek Fire Department, 2880 W. Midland Trail Lexington, VA 24450 or Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers Street, Lexington, VA 24450.

A private remembrance will be held per Mickey's request.

Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
