New Orleans Native Worked With McAllister's General Store Over 50 Years

Helen Greenhorn McAllister, 99, of 5643 Jackson River Turnpike, Hot Springs, Virginia passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at the home of her son, Edward G. McAllister, Jr.

She was born January 24, 1921 in New Orleans, Louisiana, the daughter of the late John Dixon Greenhorn and Henrietta Cuther Greenhorn.

Following her marriage to Edward "Chiefy" McAllister on January 1, 1939, they moved to Hot Springs and she soon became a part of operating McAllister's General Store where she was the cashier/bookkeeper for 51 years.

She was an active member of Eden United Methodist Church for more than 70 years, the Bath County Senior Citizens, the Rebekah Lodge for over 60 years and the former Hot Springs Fire and Rescue Ladies Auxiliary where she served as Chaplin.

She is survived her son, Edward G. McAllister, Jr. and wife, Claudia Broce McAllister of Hot Springs; two nieces, Debra Greenhorn Dusterwald and husband, Bill and Esther Greenhorn, both of Maryland; two nephews, Thomas Greenhorn and wife, Wanda and Herbert Greenhorn and wife, Wanda, also of Maryland; several great nieces and great nephews; and two special god daughters, Kendal Woodzell and Carrie Tidd.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Pat Greenhorn and a nephew, Dickie Greenhorn.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 7, 2020 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Pastor Lorrie Aiken and Pastor David George officiating. Interment will be in Warm Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bart Ailstock, Todd Ailstock, Johnny Dusterwald, David Foster, Chris Greenhorn, Herb Greenhorn, Eddie Greenhorn, Graham Kershner, John Kershner, Parke Kershner, Don Ryder, Gary Smith, Gilbert Williams and Jeff Woodzell. Honorary Pallbearers will be Gerald "Duck" Gray, Dwight Hanshew, Gentry Kershner, Bobby Lacks, Elwood Smith, Tommy Stewart and Clifford Williams.

The family will receive friends Saturday, one hour prior to services from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home.
