Obituary for Dorothy Anne Newman Brown Dorothy Anne Newman Brown
Accomplished Pianist Was Grace Presbyterian Church Member

Dorothy Anne Newman Brown, 76, of Lexington, Virginia went to be with her Lord Jesus February 27, 2020 at her home.

The daughter of the late Col. James Blakey Newman and Dorothy Heflin Newman, she was born April 11, 1943 at Stonewall Jackson Hospital.

Her mother was the head of the English department at Lexington High School for many years. Her father and grandfather, Col. Sterling Murray Heflin, were both cadets and physics professors at Virginia Military Institute following in a long lineage of VMI cadets.

Greatly missing her are her husband, Ted Harrison Brown; sisters, Carol Dell Newman and Harriet Newman Twigg (Mark); children, David S. Brown (Adriene), Martha E. Stoudnour (Tim), Ryan H. Brown (Karla) and Katherine B. Moore (John); grandchildren, Sterling T. Brown, Hayden A. Moore (VMI '17), Allison E. Stoudnour, Monica L. Brown Rosenberg (Matt),Darby W. Moore, Trenton L. Stoudnour, Olivia M. Brown, Erin Katherine Moore, Karsten H. Brown, Jescenia M.R. Brown and Bridget Anne B. Moore; and many other family members and dear friends.

Dottie realized Jesus was real and asked Him to be her Lord and Savior at the age of 28.

Dottie loved summer camp as a child at Camp Nimrod for Girls, where she eventually served as a camp counselor and a water safety instructor. Years later at age 65 the Lord returned the love of camp as a ministry opportunity. Dottie volunteered at Grace Bible Camp as the registrar and camp office coordinator for the next six summers. She and Ted then began volunteering as adult guest hosts for Young Life Camps in Michigan, New York, North Carolina and Virginia.

Dottie also loved playing the piano. Already an accomplished classically trained pianist, God gave her a new ability to begin to play by ear and to improvise not always requiring the written score at the age of 60. She started playing the organ at Tabernacle Church in Norfolk and after moving back to Lexington found great joy in playing the piano as a part of the worship team at Grace Presbyterian Church where she was a member.

Dottie has been especially blessed the last several years by her dear friends in the Moms in Prayer Group.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 5 at Harrison Funeral Home. A Memorial Celebration will be Friday, March 6 at 11 a.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church, 40 Village Way, Lexington, conducted by the Rev. Paul Carter.

Memorial contributions may be made to Young Life, Wild Ridge Camp Development #8575, P. O. Box 70065, Prescott, Arizona 86304-7065 and Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers Street, Lexington, Va. 24450.
