Taylor Greer Woody Sr., 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2020 at his home.

Mr. Woody was born on September 7, 1926 in Franklin County and was the son of the late Dalton Dillard Woody and Blanche Parcell Woody.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Major Willis Woody; a son, Dalton Dillard Woody; his first wife, Babe Marie Balser Woody; and his late wife, Wykle Gwinn Woody.

Mr. Woody attended Augusta Military Academy. After his graduation, he earned several college football scholarships, but was drafted into World War II, serving in Italy. Upon return from Italy, Taylor went into business with his father at Woody Chevrolet which opened in 1933. Taylor owned and operated Woody Chevrolet until 2010.

He served several terms on the Lexington City Council. He was instrumental in the revitalization of Historic Downtown Lexington and was part of the Rockbridge Area Economic Development Commission. He was a lifelong member of the Lexington Lions Club, the Knights of Pythias, and the Lexington Presbyterian Church. Through the years, Taylor served on the board of directors of several area banks.

Throughout his life, Taylor was an avid golfer. He was the last founding charter member of the Lexington Golf & Country Club. On his 90th birthday, the LGCC honored him with a tribute golf dinner and tournament in which he shot a hole in one on the 14th hole.

He is survived by his children, Taylor Greer (TG) Woody Jr. (Nena), Sally Woody Rattigan, and Charles "Will" Woody (Betsy), all of Lexington; a stepdaughter, Alyson Bond (Eric) of Waynesboro; daughter-in-law, Debi Woody Maschal (Nick) of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Tom Woody (Amy), Amy Woody, Jack Rattigan (Shayla), Brooks Woody, Emma Wykle, and Avery Woody, and Morgan and Drew Bond; two great-grandchildren, Reagan and Dalton Woody; special nephews, David Woody, Wayne Woody, Mark Woody, the late Damon Woody, and late niece Pam Woody. Also Taylor will be sadly missed by nephew Johnny Pratt Mason, who called Taylor "Uncle T" and the rest of JP's siblings. Special extended family members were the late Grover, Deanie, and Harry Lee Smith and surviving brother Carl Smith.

There will be no visitation. Burial is private and will take place at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery.

A celebration of Taylor's life will be held at a later date at the Lexington Golf & Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Tee Youth Golf Program for Rockbridge County. Donations may be mailed in memory of Taylor to First Tee of the Roanoke Valley, 3707 Densmore Road, Northwest, Roanoke, VA 24017 or Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers St., Lexington, VA 24450.
