Well-Known Bath County Educator Dies At Age 82

Percy Conway (Buzz) Nowlin III, 82, of Hot Springs, Virginia passed away Friday, April 24, 2020 at the Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia.

He was born October 18, 1937 in Martinsville, Virginia, the son of the late Percy Conway Nowlin, Jr. and Kathryn Kunz Nowlin.

Mr. Nowlin was a 1959 graduate of VMI. He attended East Tennessee State University and University of Virginia. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served as an Airborne Ranger.

He was an English, U. S. Government and U. S. History teacher at Hopewell and Colonial Heights School System; Assistant Principal of Henry County High School; Principal of Fluvanna High School and the Federal Program Director; the Superintendent of Bath County Schools for 18 years and part time Superintendent of Highland Schools for three years.

He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church for over 40 years having served as Treasurer, Senior Warden and Junior Warden; and a member of the Christ Anglican Church at Union Chapel. He served on the Rockbridge Library Board and the Rockbridge Community Services; and the Bath Board of Supervisors for 12 years.

He was a Kazim Shriner and member of the Clifton Forge Shrine Club; 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Master Mason; a past Worshipful Master of Valley Springs Lodge #265 and Past District Deputy Grand Master of 23 Masonic District; a member of the Millboro Masonic Lodge #28, the Millboro Ruritan Club, the Bath County Lions Club, the Son of the Confederate Veterans, and the North-South Skirmish Association for 50 years.

Mr. Nowlin was instrumental in developing the Bath County Parks and Recreation Department and keeping the Bath County Chamber of Commerce running for many years.

He was an avid outdoorsman and was a member of the Ft. Lewis Hunt Club.

Mr. Nowlin is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Harrison Nowlin of Hot Springs; a son and wife, James and Joni Nowlin of Ft. Defiance, Virginia; and four grandchildren, Emma and Makenzie Nowlin, Katelynn and Dillon Lavaway.

A graveside service will be conducted at Warm Springs Cemetery 3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 26, 2020 with Father Tom McHenry officiating.
