Obituary for Thomas (Tom) O_Meara Thomas (Tom) O_Meara
Highly Decorated Korean War Veteran Was Outstanding Area Athletic Promoter

Thomas (Tom) O_Meara, age 89, of 313 Alleghany Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia died Monday, May 4, 2020 at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem.

He was born November 21, 1930 in Dry Branch, West Virginia to the late James and Clora Dixon O'Meara.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, receiving the Purple Heart and five Bronze Stars.

He was a retired glass worker for Libby Owens Ford Glass Company and a member of the Clifton Forge Baptist Church.

Tom loved local sports and was a member of the Clifton Forge Quarterback Club, the Clifton Forge Athletic Club, and the especially the Mountaineer Athletic Club (MAC), for whom he diligently raised much-needed funds and was affectionately known for his "Give me a dollar" greeting. He was always there for anyone, in particular his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Howard O'Meara, and three brothers, Ralph O'Meara, James "Mink" O'Meara and Robert "Lucky" O'Meara.

He is survived by his son, Thomas O'Meara, Jr. and wife Debbie of Clifton Forge; a sister, Barbara Cooper and a brother, Bill O'Meara, both of Dry Branch, WV; a brother-in-law, Gary Warlitner of Clifton Forge; three grandchildren, Philip Scott O'Meara and wife, Heather, Matthew Louis O'Meara and wife, Amy, and Stephanie Lee O'Meara Hall and husband, Brian; six great grandchildren, Gabriel Thomas O'Meara, Chelsea Faith O'Meara, Owen Curtis O'Meara, Rebecca Tate Hall, Eliot Conrad O’'Meara and Morgan Janice O'Meara; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Due to the current health conditions, a private graveside funeral service will be held in Springwood Baptist Church Cemetery, Buchanan, VA with Matthew O'Meara officiating. Friends may call at Nicely Funeral Home any time on Wednesday during normal business hours in compliance with the Governor's order.
