Obituary for Doyle (Pat) Eugene Patterson Doyle (Pat) Eugene Patterson
U. S. Navy Veteran Worked With U. S. Postal Service And Creation Of 9 Digit Zip Code

Doyle (Pat) Eugene Patterson, 84, of Stuarts Draft, Virginia and formerly of Monterey, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at his home.

He was born December 8, 1935 in Wooster, Ohio, a son to the late Ernest and Clista Arverst (Aukerman) Patterson.

A U. S. Navy veteran, Pat honorably served from 1954 until 1957. Following his discharge, Pat began his employment with the United States Postal Service, where he remained until his retirement as a postal supervisor in Norfolk. Of his many accomplishments while employed with the postal service, Pat was most proud of his work on the ground floor to implement the nine-digit zip code. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Highland County to enjoy mountain living.

Pat enjoyed volunteering his time as a member of both the Monterey and Lexington Lions Clubs as well as the Lexington Ruritan Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking projects and was a master gardener. Above all, Pat will be well remembered for his kind and gentle soul.

Pat is survived by his wife of 39 years, Kathleen; daughter, Patricia Gibson; step-daughter, Gayle Wenzel; step-sons, Eddie Spry and Rhett Dudley; as well as six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Forrest and Wayne Patterson; and two sisters, Norma Sturgis and Edna Patterson.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, June 6, 2020 in Monterey Cemetery with Rev. Tommy Carrico officiating.

Pallbearers will be members of the Monterey Lions Club.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice, Pat had a special interest for animals.

The Obaugh Funeral Home, McDowell, Virginia, is in charge of arrangements.
