Obituary for Herbert Curtis Dean Herbert Curtis Dean
Selma Native Was World War II Radar Mechanic

Herbert Curtis Dean, 91, of Selma, Virginia passed away Sunday, June 7, 2020 at his residence.

He was born November 21, 1928 in Bath County, Virginia, the son of the late Grant Dean and Tempie Bell Stapleton Dean.

He was married to Patricia Ann Smith Dean, his wife of 19 years whom he married on December 2, 2000.

Mr. Dean was retired from the United States Air Force where he served during World War II as a radar mechanic.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting, playing golf with his grandson and spoiling his dog, "Sneakers".

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

In addition to his wife, Patricia, he is survived by two children, Randy Smith of Selma and Angela McGrew and husband, David of Jackson, Mississippi; two grandsons, Tristan McGrew of Jackson, Alan Smith of Selma; a brother, Marvin "John" Dean of Obetz, Ohio; a sister, Gracie Liptrap of Newport News, Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Callie Wilson, Myrtle Cauley, Beatrice Ryder, Ida Slayers; four brothers, Norvel "Doc" Dean; twin brothers, Troy "Shorty" Dean and Roy "Dizzy" Dean, Carson "Sarge" Dean.

A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 11, 2020 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Reverend W. Ed Mansfield officiating. Interment will be in Jacob Cleek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mark McCoy, Raymond Brughman, David McGrew, Tristan McGrew, Randy Smith, Larry Smith, Bucky Smith, Steve Hostetter and Alan Smith. Military honors will be provided by VFW Post 1033, Curtis A. Smith Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
