Lawrence (Larry) W. Broomall Jr. died peacefully in his home on Monday, September 14, 2020 at the age of 78.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence "Ward" Broomall and Ruth Elizabeth Broomall, and his younger sister Dorothy "Dottie" Jane Broomall.

Larry is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Donna Broomall. He is also survived by his brother, Tom Broomall; sons, Jeffrey W. (Rebecca) Broomall and Michael (Mariam) Todd; and grandchildren, Hunter and Oceana Broomall and Layla, Ahmad, Isha, Anousheh, and Jasper Todd.

Larry was born May 28, 1942 in Bridgeton, New Jersey. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Glassboro State College and his Ed. D. from Virginia Tech. He was a captain in the Air Force from 1964 to 1970.

He met Donna in Great Falls, Montana, and after a brief courtship, they were married. Their life together involved partnering through Larry's prestigious career in higher education, which culminated in serving as a vice president at Washington and Lee University. Throughout, he actively served in the name of Christ through his churches and various professional positions.

Prior to joining W&L in 1986, he held progressively responsible positions at Glassboro State College, Gloucester County College, Virginia Tech, and The College of William & Mary. He was promoted to vice president for finance at W&L in 1996 and retired from that role in 2004. In retirement, he served as the interim CFO at Sweet Briar College and Wilson College.

During his career, Larry was a member of a number of professional organizations, including the Association for Institutional Research and Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers (EACUBO).

He was on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Education Finance. He served as president of EACUBO and was on the board of NACUBO.

In Lexington, Larry gave freely of his time as a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club and the Rockbridge Area Free Clinic, and was a member of the board of directors of the Stonewall Jackson Hospital and the Lexington Downtown Development Association. He also served as president of Lexington's Chamber of Commerce and was a member of its city council.

Besides his notable professional achievements, Larry was a gentle soul who led by example, actively participating in various community organizations such as SML Good Neighbors, Lake Christian Ministries, and Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Whether serving food, reading to children, or using his God-given talents as a leader by serving on various boards, no opportunity was too small for Larry.

An outdoor celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 26 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Moneta.
