Monterey Native Was Longtime Homestead Employee, Hot Springs Presbytertian Church Member

Anita Gray Chestnut Cauley, 94, of Hot Springs, Virginia passed away Thursday, October 8, 2020 at her residence.

She was born September 17, 1926 in Monterey, Virginia, the daughter of the late James Otis Chestnut and Icie Gray Gutshall Chestnut.

Mrs. Cauley was employed at the Homestead Resort in the Housekeeping Department with over 40 years of service.

She was a member of the Hot Springs Presbyterian Church, a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Women and a member of the Daughters of Rebekah Lodge.

She loved playing Scrabble with her friends, Father McGinnity and Opal Gazzola. She enjoyed playing Progressive Rummy with her family in which she had a new set of rules for every game. Mrs. Cauley loved working with her church's yearly yard sale and bake sale. She was an excellent cook and was famous for her Fresh Apple Cakes.

She married Charles Denver Cauley on June 19, 1948. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on November 11, 2001.

She is survived by her daughter, Crystal Anita Stephenson of Monterey, Virginia; five grandchildren, Crysta and Dorothy Stephenson, both of Monterey, Virginia; Charles, Thomas and James Tucci of Arizona; seven great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Suzanna Landrum, Alyssa Tucci, Cameron and Hailey Tucci, Tabitha Tucci and Andrew Hullihen; a brother, Bobby Chestnut and wife, Edna of Stephens City, Virginia; and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Doris Marie Tucci; brothers and sisters, her twin, Juanita Thompson, Christine Chestnut, James Otis Chestnut, Jr., Carl Chestnut, Darrell Chestnut, Ila Claytor, Lowell Wayne Chestnut, Lyle Chestnut, Stewart Chestnut and Curtis Chestnut.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 18, 2020 at the Hot Springs Presbyterian Church with Pastor Scott Conrad officiating and Dorothy Stephenson assisting. Interment will be in Warm Springs Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Keswick D. Phillips, Keswick F. Phillips, Bill Wagner, Bart Ailstock, Charles Tucci, James Tucci and Tommy Tucci. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Chestnut, Mark Chestnut, Dean Chestnut, Dale Chestnut and Otis Chestnut.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Saturday evening at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home.
