Obituary for Charles Herbert Downey Charles Herbert Downey
Rockbridge County Resident Was Former Lowe's, Autozone Employee

Charles Herbert Downey, 70, went home to be with his Savior on Friday, October 23, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 2, 1950 to Kathleen Wood Downey and Garvis Rudolph Downey in the old Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathleen Wood Downey; father, Garvis Rudolph Downey; brother, Garvis Rudolph Downey, Jr., sister, Nancy Downey Barger; nephew, Garvis Rudolph Downey III; and step-son, Stuart Tyler Utley.

Charlie was a 1968 graduate of Natural Bridge High School. He was employed by Lowe's of Lexington and AutoZone. He retired from truck driving with Neat and Roberts in Dunnville, Ky., with over 30 years of driving.

Charlie served in the Navy in active duty with the Seabees from 1970-1972 and in the Naval Reserve from 1969-1979.

Charlie had a life-long love of motorcycles, especially his Harleys and he rode for many years. He also enjoyed hunting with his buddies Tom, Henry and Phil. Charlie was a kind, loving, giving soul with a heart to match.

He is survived by his adoring and loving wife, Janice Reynolds Downey; step-daughter, Kelley Jo Swink (Todd); granddaughters, Kenna Swink, Hailey Swink; mother-in-law, Virginia Reynolds; sister-in-law, Nannie B. Downey; step-son, Matthew Utley (Becky); nephews, Scott Downey (Maria); Kent Downey (Marisa); Rudy's wife, Mary Downey; nephews, Jeff Barger, Benton Barger, and his precious fur baby, Gia. Also, cousins and many dear and precious friends.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 31 at Life Chapel by the Rev. David Lively. Masks will be required at the service. Burial will follow at Glasgow Cemetery.
