Sara Elizabeth (Becky) Godby, 50, of Lewisburg, WV, danced her way into Heaven November 9, 2020.
She passed away peacefully with family by her side after a two year battle with melanoma.
Born March 20, 1970 to Frank and Mary Godby of Alderson, Becky was the only girl in a tight knit family of six. She was passionate about her family and always put everyone's needs ahead of herself. She felt the love of all her five brothers, parents and extended family during her recent journey.
A 1988 graduate of Greenbrier East High School, she was a varsity cheerleader for three years and served as head cheerleader her senior year. She was an active member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She graduated with academic honors including being named a Greenbrier Scholar and Salutatorian of her class.
Becky went on to attend Cumberland College in Williamsburg, KY and enjoyed discovering the natural beauty of the state. She graduated with honors in 1992 with a degree in political science.
Becky was a devoted Christian and lived her life to encourage others in their commitment to God. Even with her illness her faith never wavered. She was a lifelong member of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson. She served on many church committees including hospitality and finance, also serving at times as the church clerk and teller.
Becky was a dedicated legal assistant for Barry Bruce and Associates for more than 25 years. Her commitment to her "work family" and her focus on perfection made her irreplaceable.
Becky's other passion in life was dancing. Never professionally trained, but even in her high school years, she choreographed cheers and dances for the team. In 1995 she became interested in line dancing at the local Longhorn Corral and soon became a star. She enjoyed her time with the dance club from performing lip sync as Elvis to joining the dance team "The Sole Destroyers". The team performed at local festivals and sponsored dance exhibitions at the annual Thunder in the Mountains. One of the highlights for Becky was the dance team traveling to Nashville and performing as feature dancers at The Wild Horse Saloon.
Becky's skills were not only country in nature but extended into modern dance as she was soon spotted by Trillium Performing Arts. She began in 2000 dancing in a piece or two for their Lewisburg programs and stage managing. She quickly became one of Trillium's most dependable and versatile dancers taking parts in comedy to drama. She never turned down a part as she could play the "romping puppy" to the "ballerina". She can now claim the record for participation in the most Trillium pieces as she would dance in sometimes four different pieces for the night.
Becky was not only a student of dance but also a teacher. She took on the job of being the youth Hip Hop instructor numerous times. She learned the art of Poi and continued to perfect her dance skills. She always enjoyed her performances from locally at Carnegie Hall to Festival in Charleston, WV. She was truly devoted to her Trillium family.
Becky is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Frank and Minnie Godby; maternal grandparents, Bob and Mamie Copeland and uncles, Ray Godby and Charlie Miller.
She is survived by her loving parents, Frank and Mary; brothers, Frankie and Kellie, Jimmy and Jamie, Joe, Carl and Kristi, Sam and Tracey.
Becky was a devoted and loving aunt to her nieces and nephews: Tracie, Sarah, Franklin, Rosemary, Thomas, Will and James as well as to her great nephews Jackson, Bryar and Jameson. She will be deeply missed by her many aunts, uncles and cousins as well as her "special" nieces and nephews and close friends, Belinda Lonergan, Julie Turner and Crystal Faulkiner.
Funeral arrangements are by Wallace and Wallace in Lewisburg. All visitation and services will be held at Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson on Thursday, November 12, 2020. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. with the service at 1 p.m. Burial will immediately follow at Fletcher Addition of Alderson Cemetery.
