Obituary for Roy Byrd, Sr. Roy Byrd, Sr.
Clifton Forge Native Was World War II Veteran, C&O Railroad Retiree

Roy Byrd, Sr., age 96, of 805 Mound Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia died Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at LewisGale Hospital – Alleghany in Low Moor.

A lifelong resident of Clifton Forge, Roy was born October 29, 1924 to the late George and Eva Robinson Byrd.

He was a graduate of Jefferson High School and served for six years in the United States Army during World War II.

He worked 36 years for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, retiring as a Stationary Fireman, and was a 70-year member of First Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Louise Wills Byrd; a daughter, Stephanie Ann Byrd Edwards; and four brothers and sisters.

He is survived by a daughter, Leala Byrd of New York; Roy Edward Byrd, Jr. of Clifton Forge; two sisters, Mary Waddy and Jean Megginson, both of Clifton Forge; seven grandchildren, Salisha Smith, Trentie Meekins, Tretin Meekins, Moses Hunter III, Christie Hunter, Keith Hunter and Chase Woodard; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated.

There will be no services at this time.

Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, is handling arrangements.
