Obituary for Thurman Lee Painter Thurman Lee Painter
Buena Vista Resident Was Korean War Veteran, Mohawk Retiree

Thurman Lee Painter, 89, of Buena Vista, Virginia, went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, December 14, 2020.

Born March 3, 1931 in Buena Vista, he was the son of the late Jessie Calvin Painter and Mary Drain Painter.

Thurman served his country with the U. S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal. When he returned home he began his career with James Lees (Mohawk) and retired after 43 years of dedicated service.

Thurman was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Buena Vista. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially with his grandchildren, and Chad Staton and Nathan Horn.

He was preceded in death by siblings Louise Mead, Lewis Painter, Lyle Painter and Irene Bishop.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Alice Mae Lynn Painter; children, Brenda Lonas, Mary Anna Summers (Ted), Sharon Chittum (Steve), T. Lee Painter Jr., and Kathy Painter; grandchildren, David, Matthew and Kacee Lonas, Anthony and Joshua Wright, Wendy Hargrove, Jason Chittum, Ashley Marshall, Christy Tomlin, Stacey, Randy, and Bridgette Painter, Kamilah and Imeri Meeks; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Helen Wright, Doris Reid, both of Buena Vista, Catherine Painter, of Ashland, and Loretta Staton (Charles) of Powhatan.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, December 21 at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dean Staton officiating.

Social distancing and masks are required at the service.

The family would like to extend their gratefulness to Beth Derr and the rest of the staff at Shenandoah Valley Health & Rehab Center.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victory Baptist Church, 3700 Lombardy Ave., Buena Vista, VA 24416.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
