Clifton Forge Native Dies In Maryland At Age 71

Gary Lynn Miller, 71, of Cumberland, Maryland, died Sunday, December 20, 2020 at UMPC-Western Maryland.

Born September 4, 1949 in Clifton Forge, Virginia, he was the son of the late Everette Lynn Miller, Jr. and Vera Kathryn (Smith) Miller.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Barry Wayne Miller, and a sister-in-law, Tracey Dawson.

Gary was a graduate of Alleghany High School in Covington, Virginia. He then attended Alleghany Community College, studying architectural engineering.

He was retired from CSX with 42 years of service. Gary had started as a clerk, followed by an operator in the towers, and then yardmaster.

Gary was a Past Master of Potomac Lodge #100, A.F. & A.M.; past member of the Masonic Temple Board; 32nd. Degree, Cumberland Scottish Rite Bodies; Knights of St. Andrew; Ali Ghan Shrine, where he served as Potentate in 2008; and, Cumberland Court #117, R.O.J. At Ali Ghan Shrine, he also belonged to the Directors Staff, Highlanders Unit, Campers Club, Past Masters Unit, Caberi, and was Garden Club Treasurer. Gary had served on the Ali Ghan Club Board, Financial Advisory Board, and was currently serving as Treasurer. He was most proud of serving as chairman of the Ali Ghan Statue/Commemorative Walkway. He was also a charter member of the Masonic Corvette Club and enjoyed racing at the Cumberland airport.

Gary was an honorary member of Rajah, ZemZem, Zembo, Sphinx, Irem, and Almas Shrine Temples, as well as East Gate Lodge #216, A.F. & A.M.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 50 years, Donna "Susie" (Hutson) Miller; two daughters, Cari Miller and husband, David Stobie, Lewes, DE, and Brigitte Sullivan and husband, Lennie, Jr., Catonsville; two grandchildren that he spoiled rotten, Ciera and Chase Barnett; two sisters, Paige Miller and husband, Dr. Steven Gulkus and Beverly Albarran, and husband, Dr. Alan Albarran; two brothers-in-law, Greg Hutson and wife, Linda, and John Mike Hutson and wife, Julie; and, several special nieces and nephews.

The Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, is handling arrangements. Due to COVID, a private viewing will be held for the family. Folks are welcome to view the Masonic service on our FaceBook page on Tuesday, December 22nd at 6:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 1645 W. 8th. Street, Erie, PA 16505.

The family will be having a Celebration of Life party in the summer of 2021 so family and friends can share the life and times of Gary with them.
