Obituary for Margery B. Couper Margery B. Couper
Pennsylvania Native Was Active In The Rockbridge County Community

Margery B. Couper died Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Kendal at Lexington (Virginia).

She was the widow of John Lee Couper, M.D.

Born in Clark's Summit, Pennsylvania in 1921 to Dorothy Thomason and Floyd D. Beemer.

She was a graduate of Parson's School of Design.

She is survived by three children, William (Elise Palma), Mary Lee (Kenneth Newman des.), and Nicholas B. (Elizabeth Raney); eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was married in 1945 when Dr. Couper returned from serving in the European Theatre in World War II. They lived in NYC where Margery helped Dr. Couper and Dr. Frederick Wilke start St. Hilda's Episcopal School (now St. Hilda's and St. Hugh's).

In 1953, Dr. and Mrs. Couper moved to Tenafly, N.J., where she was a member of the Tenafly Library Board, the Architectural Review Board, the committee to establish Johnson Park, and president of the Junior League of Bergen Co., N.J.

In 1972, Dr. and Mrs. Couper moved to Lexington, Dr. Couper's childhood home. There she was active in the R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church, APVA, the Rockbridge Historical Society, the Blue Ridge Garden Club, the committee to establish the new regional library and was a longtime member of the Library Board of Trustees.

The family appreciates the care and kindness of the Borden Center staff.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Rockbridge Regional Library (138 S. Main St., Lexington, VA 24450) are suggested.

A memorial service will be held later in the year.
