Robert (Bob) Davis Funkhouser departed his earthly life on January 17, 2021 at the age of 101 and six months at Heritage Hall in Lexington.

Bob was born July 15, 1919 at Fancy Hill in Rockbridge County.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilton Leitch and Martha McCormick Snider Funkhouser; his wife of 69 years, Virginia Stoner Parsons Funkhouser, who passed away on February 1, 2011; sisters, Nancy Elizabeth Funkhouser and Edith Miller Funkhouser Major; brothers, Jack Walton Funkhouser and wife, Betty, and Harry Edward Funkhouser and wife, Martha Sue; and nephew, Lawrence "Butch" Funkhouser.

He is survived by his brother, Carlton "Cracker" Lee Funkhouser and wife, Lisa of Glasgow; and his children, Virginia Maxine Funkhouser Smith and husband, Sherrill of Salem, and Roger Davis Funkhouser and wife, Sarah of Glasgow.

His grandchildren include Maxine's children, Duane Kevin Smith of Salem, Stimis Ray Smith and wife, Teresa of Salem, Sonja Leigh Smith Overholt and husband, Robert "Clay" of Lynchburg, and Diron Darst Smith and wife, Dana of Port Murray, N.J.; and Roger's children, Adam Blake Funkhouser and friend, Mary of Glasgow, and Ashley Renee Funkhouser Stong and husband, Chris of San Antonio, Texas.

His great-grandchildren include Duane's children, Morgan Renee Smith and Madison Mackenzie Smith; Stimis's children, Annalise Michelle Smith and Harrison Wirt Smith; Sonja's children, Jessica Nicole Overholt Phelps and husband, Chase and Kristina Skye Overholt; Diron's children, Braeden Joseph Smith, Katherine Elizabeth Smith and Delaney Regan Smith; Adam's child, Oceana Virginia Marie Funkhouser, and Ashley's child, Parson Alene Stong.

He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Bob attended the old Natural Bridge School. He left school to work on the farm and as an understudy for an electrician before going to work at James Lee and Son Carpets in Glasgow. He retired from Burlington Industries in 1985 after 46 years of dedicated service.

Bob was a veteran of World War II and a Purple Heart recipient. He was drafted into the United States Army February 6, 1943, and was sent to Fort Lee, Va., and then to Fort McClellan, Ala., for basic training. After 13 weeks of training he was sent to Newport News, and then traveled by ship to North Africa to join the 34th Division. He then traveled to Salerno, Italy, and fought under General Mark Clark in the heavy division, guns and mortars. Robert contracted malaria and received shrapnel wounds while serving. He was honorably discharged August 31, 1945.

Bob was the oldest member of High Bridge Presbyterian Church. He became a member by Profession of Faith on April 25, 1948.

He enjoyed playing cards, bingo, hunting, fishing, gardening, carnivals and time spent with family and friends.

A thank you from all the family to everyone for all the support, cards, visits, and prayers that Bob enjoyed throughout his many years of life. A special thank you to all the staff of Heritage Hall for his wonderful care during the last few years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Glasgow Rescue Squad, Glasgow Fire Department or the High Bridge Presbyterian Church.

A graveside service will be held at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens with military honors at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 23 with the Rev. Randy Smith officiating.
