Rockbridge County Native Was Known As "The Pumpkin Lady"

Nancy Snowbird Johnson Swisher, 90, of Fairfield, Virginia, died Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at the Blue Ridge Christian Home.

She was born January 29, 1930 in Rockbridge County, a daughter of James Owen Johnson and Bessie Anna Bane Johnson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Maynard Swisher Sr. Nancy was the last surviving member of the James and Bessie Johnson family.

Nancy was a member of the New Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Fairfield where she taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school. She volunteered her time working with the Fairfield Senior Citizen Group.

Nancy was well known as the pumpkin lady far and wide. She was the hallmark at Swisher's Farm for over 40 years where pumpkins, fruits, vegetables and furniture was sold. Mrs Swisher's warm, caring and helpful attitude and her taking the time to talk to people was considered by many as one of her greatest attributes.

Surviving are her children, Jerry Maynard Swisher Jr. (Donna), Larry Johnson Swisher (Amy), Susan Lynn Hutchison (James); six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021 at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Cemetery by the Rev. Brandon McClung and the Rev. Jim Reynolds.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the charity of your choice.
