Hubert Tinsley Johnson, age 89, of 304 Lacks Avenue, Covington, Virginia died Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at Virginia Veterans Care Center in Salem.

He was born July 5, 1931 in Clifton Forge, Virginia to the late Carper and Elvina Irvine Johnson.

He grew up at 110 Ridgeway Street and was a graduate of Clifton Forge High School. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1956 in the Korean War. He was the first in the area to sell and service fire extinguishers during the 1960's and 1970's through Alleghany Fire Extinguishers, and retired from Westvaco after 34 years.

After retirement, he joined the Civil Air Patrol as a volunteer for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing and hunting. He was a gun enthusiast and could often be found at the shooting range testing his reloads. He enjoyed photography and gardening. He loved sharing his plants and vegetables with neighbors and friends. He also enjoyed travelling to the Outer Banks to go surf fishing.

He was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose.

He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed visiting many local churches.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Johnson Jones and her husband, Willie, and also by a special brother-in-law, Tom Patterson.

He is survived by his son, Brian Johnson and wife, Becky of Covington; his three daughters, Catherine Chambers of Covington, Sharon Johnson of Roanoke, and Valerie Marshall of Clifton Forge; his sister, Margie Patterson of Augusta County; seven grandchildren, Christopher Chambers, Timothy Marshall, Jr., Brandon Marshall and wife, Jamie, Zachary Johnson, Hannah Johnson, Adrin Marshall and wife, Samantha, and Cameron Marshall; two great grandchildren, Lucca Chambers and Emma Marshall; a niece, Karen McCoy; and six nephews, Willis, Jeffery, Stacey, Kevin, Keith, and Eric Jones.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Michael Warren officiating. The services will conclude at the funeral home. A private interment will follow at Galatia Presbyterian Church, Eagle Rock. There will be no formal visitation. The family will be present on Saturday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.
