Selma Resident Was U. S. Navy Veteran, Retired CSX Welder

Guy Douglas (Doug) Slayton, age 73, of 1207 John Tyler Street, Selma, Virginia died Friday, February 12, 2021 at LewisGale Hospital – Alleghany in Low Moor.

Doug was born March 28, 1947 in Covington, Virginia to the late Guy Ralph and Annie Lucille Lucas Slayton.

He served in the United States Navy and was a retired welder for CSX Transportation.

He was a life member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, having earned the Pilgrim's Degree in 2003, and served with the Moose Heart Orphanage and the Seniors Home "Moosehaven".

He was a loving husband, father, and brother. He volunteered his time serving Meals on Wheels, and enjoyed NASCAR, hunting, and fishing.

In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by a sister, Karen Whitmer and a brother, Ronnie Slayton.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen "Minnie" Broughman Slayton of Selma; a son, Scott Slayton and wife, Joy of White Rock Gap Covington; a special nephew, Bobby Hippert and wife, Terrie of Selma; two sisters, Linda Caldwell and husband, Pat of Covington, and Susan Campbell and husband, Butch of Clifton Forge; as well as a host of other nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Jonathan Greer and Mr. Chris Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge.

Pallbearers will be Joe Coffman, Gavin Campbell, Jared Hippert, Taylor Hippert, Travis Snyder, Aaron Thompson, and Randy Tinsley. Honorary pallbearers will be Tony Belcher, Golden Terry, C. R. Nicely, Mike Hall, David Harris, and Timmy Blackburn.

The family will be present at Nicely Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Clifton Forge Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 419, Clifton Forge, VA 24422 or to the American Lung Association, Donation Processing Center, P. O. Box 11039, Lewiston, ME 04243-9409.
