Manly Memorial Baptist Church Member Was Teacher, MDA Volunteer

Dorothy (Dot) Laura Sparks Fuller, 89, of Lexington, Virginia, died Wednesday, February 24, 2021 in the Borden Center at Kendal at Lexington.

Mrs. Fuller was born on October 1, 1931 in the Baptist Valley area of Tazewell County, a daughter of the late Albert Edward Sparks Sr. and Eula Maude Brown Sparks.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Harold Fuller Sr., and a son, James "Jim" Harold Fuller Jr.; three brothers, Albert E. Sparks Jr., Jack W. Sparks and John L. Sparks; and one sister, Sally Mae Sparks Graham.

Dot was a graduate of Radford College and was a teacher at Richlands Elementary School for 13 years and substituted for Lexington and Rockbridge County schools after moving to Lexington.

She was a member of the Manly Memorial Baptist Church in Lexington where she held several positions over the years, including Sunday school teacher, deacon and Religious Herald representative. She traveled with the church mission team on three trips to Costa Rica and hosted numerous college students from VMI and W&L through the church. Dot also worked with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) for 25 years during the Labor Day Telethon.

Mrs. Fuller is survived by two brothers, Robert "Bob" G. Sparks and wife, Betty of Baptist Valley, and Shelby B. Sparks and wife, Jennie of Hilliard, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Dee Fuller of Lexington; nieces Anita Cruze (Rick) and Jennifer Fuller-Spears (Justin) of Lexington; numerous nieces and nephews; many friends, and special friends Brenda Grose and Andrea Harris of Lexington.

Graveside services will be conducted on Monday, March 1 at 2 p.m. in the Oak Grove Cemetery, formerly the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, in Lexington with Dr. J. Michael Wilkins officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Manly Memorial Baptist Church Mission Fund, 202 S. Main St., Lexington, VA 24450 or to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers St., Lexington, VA 24450.

Arrangements are by the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory.
