Obituary for Samuel Lee (Porky) Mays Samuel Lee (Porky) Mays
Longtime Buena Vista Business Owner Was Former City Council Member, Little League Coach

Samuel Lee (Porky) Mays, 79, of Buena Vista, Virginia, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2021 at his home.

Born January 24, 1942 in Lexington, he was the son of the late Samuel Ralph Mays and Margaret Spangler Mays.

He was also the uncle of the late Christopher Scott Moore.

Porky is survived by Diane Mays; his sons, Stacey (Jenny Shafer) and Allan Mays; grandchildren, Parker, Sadie, and Axl Mays; sister, Susan Moore; brother-in-law, Gus Moore; nieces, Jordan Whitman (Lucas) and Robin Moore; great-nieces and nephews, Austin Moore, Ethan Moore, Madison Moore, and McKenna Moore; and numerous cousins. He will also be missed by his friend Janet Wallace and her daughters, Melissa Frazier and Christy Clark, whom also had a special place in his heart.

Porky was the owner of Mays' Grocery Inc., which is believed to be the longest-tenured business still operating in the city of Buena Vista. Summarizing Porky's work ethic and commitment to his business and family, he had not taken a day off from work since August 2007.

Mays' Grocery was established in the early 1930s by his grandmother. Porky loved and supported his community by serving on numerous elective boards, including Buena Vista City Council, as well as coaching little league sports for numerous years.

Porky loved to play poker every Friday night with his son, Stacey; brother-in-law, Gus Moore; Bucky Buchanan; Kirk Wheeler; Justin Walker; Joe Barger; Tommy Camden; Ben Camden; Frankie Camden; and Johnny Emore. Playing poker was an opportunity for Porky to be with family and friends throughout many years, resulting in lasting memories.

Porky loved his employees and customers whom he had the privilege to work with and serve during his 50-plus years as a business owner. Porky understood that without God, his family, coworkers, customers, and friends that none of his dreams would have been achievable.

Porky's surviving family would like to extend their love and appreciation for all the employees and customers who have supported Mays' Grocery over the years.

The Mays family will have visitation at Susan and Gus Moore’'s house, located at 2204 Maple Ave., Buena Vista, on Wednesday, March 10 from 5 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the Mays family requests donations be made to the Scott Moore Scholarship, Attn: Linda Barger, 100 Bradford Drive, Buena Vista, VA 24416.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
